What is Coaching?

In sport you might have a coach to help improve your performance.  Life coaching, is about having a coach to help you improve your performance in life.  I specialize in coaching for professionals, but that does not mean that I only focus on work problems.  Coaching is a commitment to work together over several weeks.  It involves and ongoing partnership between me and you, to help you achieve your desired results in your personal and professional life.  As a seasoned educator, trainer and mentor, my role is to facilitate your learning. To do this, I equip you with the tools and knowledge to improve your performance in work, home and relationships.  Ultimately this will enhance your quality of life.

Group Coaching

Some clients want one-to-one coaching specifically for their career, relationships, fitness, work-life balance, or many other things.   Other clients prefer coaching in a team or corporate environment.  This is especially useful when the team are facing the same challenges or opportunities.  For example, when a team is transitioning into a new area of service or when there are relationship issues affecting productivity.  I design these sessions to work with the whole team, but I can also work with individuals on specific issues they may have.  Corporate coaching is done through my association with The Brand Inside.

How is the coaching done?

The first session involves identifying what success looks like – not just at work, but in all areas of your life.  We then work together to identify opportunities for change and growth.   I  will give you assignments to complete. They are normally small tasks which take you in the direction you want to go, but they also enhance your learning and build your skills.  For example, I might ask you to read an article, join a club, or practice presenting in public.  The exact tasks will be a mixture of challenges to build your confidence and unlock your potential.

Some coaching takes place face to face, but a lot can be done by telephone or email at a weekly or monthly pre-arranged time. In a coaching session I might ask your to make a list of your personal strengths (such as, ‘I am very good at organising’, ‘I make people laugh’).  Alternatively I might get you to analyse the immediate obstacles in your path (‘I can’t seem to get a promotion at work’) and how we will overcome them.

 

Who needs coaching?

Many talented people develop the belief that they are destined to remain in their current situation. Life coaching helps people to break negative belief patterns and set challenging aspirations.  For example, many people want to earn more money and, as a goal, this is fine as far as it goes. However, what we often forget is that in order to achieve this ultimate goal, we might need to develop focus, improve our fitness and balance our lives in the process. Coaching can help people to set goals by asking themselves such questions as: How much do I want to earn? For what exact purpose? What am I prepared to do/do without?

My role is to remain supportive and non-judgmental, whilst at the same time, I encourage you to maintain motivation and commitment and to find ways of overcoming barriers and setbacks.

Is it a long term commitment?

There is no set amount of time for coaching.  It depends on your starting point and what you want to change or achieve. Some people just want some support for a short-term projects which can be arranged.  Usually you need to think about making a commitment of at least three months if you’re hoping to make sustainable changes.

Life coaching is not counselling and it’s not therapy although I do draw on aspects of my therapy practice to support some clients. Life coaching is much more practical.  It is a forward-looking way to gain clarity on what you don’t like and what you can do about it.  Having me at the end of a phone line, provide a powerful support system to keep the you moving in the right direction. Many people enjoy the external perspective on their life, which also helps them to step back and review their strengths and weaknesses.
